Research Unit

A retail exhibition about how clothing is made

Concept

Walk through the making.

Research Unit is a Cape Town slow-fashion label. It makes small-batch collections locally, sewn by women in the Cape Flats communities, and turns leftover fabric into its own packaging.

The store makes that visible. The customer is greeted at the door by raw materials, then passes a display of the making process, and ends at the finished garment. Each hanging display is one step in the life of a piece, so the clothing is read as crafted rather than mass produced.
